Training Opportunity

The last time I got my hair cut, I was telling my hair gal about doing the 3-day walk in November. She said she and some of the girls in the salon were going to walk in the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini-Marathon in April.

What a great idea for me too! So, last night I signed up my hubby and me for the 13 mile trek through the city of Louisville! It is something neither one of us has ever done, and it should be a good training for the 20+ miles I'll do each day in November.

Now, if it would only get a little warmer here so I could get out and do some walking!

Calvin Collars For The Cure!

I make special Calvin Collars for my Etsy shop in memory of my 18 year old kitty that journeyed to the bridge last October. I decided to make a For The Cure Calvin Collar with the proceeds going toward my $2,300 goal.

As you can see, a black kitty like Vivien looks especially stunning in this pink crocheted collar! They easily slip over the head and as with any collar, a cat or small dog should be supervised when wearing it. Vivien just loves her modeling job!

Thanks for checking them out!

Once a Year!

Call me crazy, but I'd rather get a mammogram than go to the dentist! I've got good teeth, but sitting in a chair with someone working in my mouth for a half an hour is way worse than getting my boobs squeezed for less than a minute!

I got my reminder phone call this morning-- about my appointment tomorrow!

Have you scheduled yours for 2010?

These Shoes Are Made for Walkin'!

The number one item I needed to begin my training was a pair of good walking shoes. I've owned various brands over the years, and in trying on shoes last November, I found the best fit and most comfortable were these Asics. They have a gel cushioning system, and they are super comfy! I got a size larger than I normally wear to accommodate the thick socks and any swelling that will probably occur in my feet.

I also was advised to get really good socks, so I bought quite a few pair of Thorlo thick cushioned distance walking crew socks. Those socks are about $14 a pair, so they aren't the ones you wear around the kitchen to dust the floor in!

Our neighborhood is great for walking, and three times around the loop equals about two miles. Ted and I were able to get in some good walks before it got so cold. As soon as the weather permits, I'll be gellin' and trekkin' some more!

A New Year's Resolution

I'm not one to make New Year's resolutions, but I am up for challenging myself to try new things. When a Catster Mom friend of mine told me about previous walks she has done in support of a cure for breast cancer, it sounded like something I'd like to try!

I told her if she ever did the walk in Arizona, I'd love to be on her Trekkin' for Ta-Tas team! Well, 2010 is the year . . . . . . and Phoenix is the place! I have until November to get in shape for the 3 day, 60 mile trek.

I've already registered and started reading through the on-line handbook. This week my starter kit arrived.

Over the holidays, I made some business cards with info about how people can donate to help me reach my goal. I gave them to some of Ted's family, and plan to hand them out to everyone I know!

The main motivation behind my interest in this cause is the number of loved ones in my family who have dealt with not only breast cancer, but also ovarian, pancreatic, and testicular cancers. It seems that cancer has touched everyone's life in some way - either through a family member or a close friend.

I hope you'll follow me on my journey. I'm looking forward to the adventure! If you would like to help me reach my goal, please click on the button in the upper right area of my blog!
